Cosmetic Vein Treatments
What kind of veins does the cosmetic sclerotherapy work for?
Sclerotherapy can be used for spider veins, tangled vein referred to as ‘telengectasias’ and for larger, web like veins called reticular veins. Veins up to 3mm can be treated.
How does it work?
A small amount of medicine, referred to as a sclerosant, is injected via a small needle. This will inflame the veins and cause them to clot. Over time, these veins disappear.
Does it hurt?
No sedation or local anesthesia is required. A very small needle is used to inject the medicine, which is only minimally uncomfortable.
How many sessions will I need?
Every patient is unique. On initial consultation, a thorough exam followed by a treatment plan will be provided. Typical sessions last up to 30 mins.
What can I expect after the procedure?
It can take up to 7 days for the veins to disappear. Compression stocking are recommended for a few weeks following the injection session. Patients can return to daily activities as tolerated, but vigorous exercise should be avoided for 2-3 days. Sun exposure should be avoided for the first few weeks as skin discoloration may result.
Are there any possible side effects?
Allergic reactions are possible, but very rare. Ulceration is also very rare but can occur. This may result in a scar at the injection site.
