About half of all Americans suffer some type of venous dysfunction. Varicose veins form when blood pools in the legs and feet or when blood clots narrow or block veins. Left untreated, they can lead to numerous serious health conditions. If you’re in that half of the population, OMNY should be your practice of choice for vein treatment.
Get Ready
A few simple steps can greatly improve your chances of success:
1. Stop Smoking
Smoking increases the risk of varicose veins and the risk of complications like ulcers, not to mention about a million other health risks.
2. Stop Taking Certain Medications
Since we’ll be working on your circulatory system, we recommend you cease taking aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and blood thinners several days prior to your procedure.
3. Eat and Drink Water
Eating well promotes general good health. We can’t guarantee a good diet will prevent varicose veins (there are many factors), but a good diet, including weight loss where appropriate, always makes for simpler procedures and quicker recovery. Since blood is mostly water, being fully hydrated will make the whole process easier, so drink plenty for a couple of days prior to treatment.
4. Compression Socks
Bring compression socks to your appointment, you’ll need to wear them every day until your first post-operative ultrasound. We also recommend no rigorous activities from 10 days after your treatment. At your post-op appointment, we’ll scan your legs for blood clots — they are rare, but we don’t take chances with your leg health.
Get Set, Go!
Some soreness and bruising in the vein treatment area should be expected. You may feel a pulling sensation in the leg as the vein inflames, heals and closes. You should notice a significant improvement in your symptoms after just a few weeks. Continuing to eat well and staying hydrated will assist in your recovery and the doctor will consult with you on resuming any medications you’re taking.
